Work continues on my 1999 ZX9R, I assembled the front brake calipers back on the bike to help bleed them through and they now work very smoothly!
Since the front benefitted from new seals I decided to remove the rear brake assembly completely so I could inspect and clean everything up. I was also keen to replace the seals and once I stripped the caliper I am right to do so.
Getting the piston out took some time, I ended up taking off the fluid line and using a 8mm dowl to push the piston out using my bench vise.
I suspect the inside of the caliper has not seen light since it was assembled in the factory back in 1999.
The rest of the night was spent cleaning out the caliper body and the piston, there is no corrosion on the piston and it and should re-assemble with new seals and fluid without any issues. I was thinking of buying a new HEL brake line kit (in red), so I might do the rear first and see what it looks like.
Other Tasks
- The front end (forks, switchgear, brakes, clutch & cables) is assembled with all maintenance tasks completed.
- Rear plastic is mounted on – still need to either source new grab handles OR try to cleanup the scratch in the left hand side plastic handle (yes, they are plastic not alloy).
- Next task is to remove the rear wheel and disassemble it.
TODO List for August
- Work out the wheel bearings that are needed and order them.
- Get the wheels and tank painted.
